Stroller Fabric – A Strong Beauty for Any Weather 💪✨
If you’re looking for a fabric that lasts, is easy to care for, and still looks great, stroller fabric will be your new favorite. Whether you sew for yourself, kids, pets 🐶 or love to make practical things for your home 🏡, this material won’t let you down. In this article, I’ll share the features of stroller fabric, sewing tips 🧵 and my personal experience – because this fabric has accompanied me since my very first beginnings. ✂️
My beginnings with stroller fabric
My first sewing projects with stroller fabric were footmuffs for strollers 👶. I made them to order, exactly according to the dimensions the clients wanted – whether for standard strollers or for special wheelchairs for non-walking children ♿️. It was a beautiful but challenging start, because each piece was unique and had to fit perfectly.
Gradually, I started to accumulate more types of stroller fabric at home, so I offered them for sale 🛒. The interest pleasantly surprised me – so we moved on. Today, we even have our own patterns made to order to offer something truly unique 🌟.
Today, we use stroller fabric for garden furniture covers, laptop sleeves 💻, cosmetic pouches 👜, backpacks 🎒 and bags – but also for less usual products, such as a three-story pencil case for children from a Waldorf school. It’s designed exactly for their special writing and drawing tools ✏️. And it’s this diversity and creativity that I still love about working with stroller fabric. 🎨
What is stroller fabric?
Stroller fabric is a strong polyester fabric with a surface treatment – most often PVC or PU coating – which makes it water-repellent or waterproof 💦. Its name suggests what it was originally intended for – making strollers and their accessories. Today, however, its use has spread much further. 🚀
Qualities you’ll appreciate
- High abrasion resistance 💪
- Water-repellency or waterproofing (depending on the type) ☔
- Strength and dimensional stability 🧱
- Easy maintenance – just wipe with a cloth 🧽
- Wide selection of colors and patterns 🎨
It’s ideal for products that need to withstand everyday use or even tougher conditions 🏕️.
What can you sew from stroller fabric?
Here are just a few ideas – I’ve tried most of them myself:
- Footmuffs for strollers or full covers 👶
- Covers for wheelchairs and special technical aids 🦽
- Bags, backpacks, cosmetic pouches 🎒👜
- Laptop sleeves, cases 💻
- Garden furniture covers 🪑
- Waldorf pencil cases (for crayons, wax blocks, pencils) 🖍️✏️
- Shoe bags, pet beds, seat pads... 💤
How to work with stroller fabric?
No need to worry – a few simple tips and you’ll manage it with ease:
- Use a thicker needle (size 90–100) 🪡
- Set a longer stitch (ideally 3–4 mm)
- If the fabric is very slippery, a Teflon or walking foot helps 🦶
- For joining several layers, use clips or pins 📎
- The edges usually don’t fray, but you can finish them with an overlock, binding, or even fuse them 🔥
I recommend regular polyester threads – our favorites are Amann 120 or special Amann Synton (the most common is size 60). These threads work great even in home sewing machines 🧵.
You can carefully fuse the thread ends on your finished product so they won’t unravel – ideal for heavily used items like bags, covers or pencil cases 💡.
Why do I recommend it to my clients?
Because it’s a fabric that combines practicality and beauty 💖. Products made from it last for years, save you the hassle of washing, and you can match them to your own style – elegant, playful or minimalist 🎀.
